With Directive 8020, we’ve included a wide range of accessibility features designed to help players tailor the experience to their individual needs and playstyles wherever possible - whether that’s adjusting gameplay difficulty, customising controls, improving readability, or reducing barriers during high-pressure moments. From subtitle customisation and gameplay assists to visual and audio options, our goal has been to create an experience that feels flexible, comfortable, and immersive for every player aboard the Cassiopeia. Here’s your guide to all accessibility features for the game: 

Accessibility

Single Action Button 

Set Quick-time events to use the same single input everytime. 

Button Mash Hold 

Complete ‘button mash’ events by holding down the button rather than tapping. 

No QTE Timeout 

This setting will remove Quick-time event timeouts (Solo Story only). 
Pressing the wrong button will still fail the QTE.


Simplified UI Font
 

This setting will change most user interface text to a simple sans-serif font, which may assist some players with dyslexia. 

Same Colour Segments 

Set wedge tool mini game segments orange to complete with one input. 

Subtitles 

Toggle subtitles on or off. 

Messenger Text Size 

Change the size of the Corinth Messenger text. 

Choice Text Size 

Change the size of the main choice text. 

Sub-Choice Text Size 

Change the size of the font of the sub-choice text. 

Simplified UI Font 

This setting will change most user interface text to a simple sans-serif font, which may assist some players with dyslexia. 

GRAPHICS 

Motion Blur 

Scales the intensity of the motion blur effect. Motion blur represents the blurring of objects based on their motion. 

0 – Removes Motion Blur. 
10 – Full intensity (Default). 

Film Grain 

Scales the intensity of the film grain effect. Film grain simulates the look of processed photographic film. It can appear as tiny, randomized particles and adds a filmic look to the rendered frame.  

0 – Removes Film Grain 
10 – Full intensity (Default) 

Chromatic Aberration 

Scales the intensity of the chromatic aberration effect. Chromatic aberration simulates the colour shifts in real-world camera lenses. 

0 – Removes Chromatic Aberration. 
10 – Full intensity (Default). 

Note: Some gameplay elements may be unaffected.

AUDIO & LANGUAGE 

Audio Preset 

Change the preset of the audio. 

Individual Volume Controls for Music, Dialogue and SFX 

Adjust music, dialogue and SFX volume levels 

Vibration Toggle 

Enable the wireless controller vibration 

Closed Captions 

Toggle closed captions on or off   

Remap Controls
View and remap control bindings. 

DIFFICULTY 

Select from the three difficulty options we provide or customise the challenge to suit you. 

Forgiving
For when you want to focus on the story.
Easily evade real-time threats with warning indicators and instant defensive parry recharge.
Warnings before critical button presses help you anticipate danger. 

Challenging
The classic Dark Pictures experience.
Real-time threats are deadly but can be fought off with defensive parries.
Critical button presses can appear without warning. Stay alert! 

Lethal
Death is inevitable.
Real-time threats are lethal with reduced opportunities for defensive parries.
Critical button presses are fast and brutal. 

Custom
For when you want to set your own rules.
Adjust the game’s challenges to your own preferences. 

QTE Difficulty
Quick-time Events are gameplay sequences that require fast or precisely time button presses in a set amount of time.
Adjust this setting to alter how challenging they are when displayed. 

QTE Warnings 
A warning that flashes onscreen before quick-time events occur. 

Parry Recharge 
Adjust the speed of the defensive parry recharge when facing real-time threats.

Threat Indicator
An indicator that shows where real-time threats are located and their awareness of your character. 

Threat Indicator Colour
Set the colour of the threat indicator. 

PLAY STYLE 

Shape how your story is affected by the choices you make. 

Explorer
“I want to explore the story as I go”
Freely explore the game’s branching story. Unlimited use of Turning Points lets you rewind and correct your mistakes whenever you wish. If a character dies, you have the option to reverse their death. 

Survivor
“I want to live and die by my decisions”
No rewinds using Turning Points. If a character dies, you must deal with the consequences. If you survive to the game’s ending, Turning Points are unlocked to explore the story.
